To the best beer in Minnesota...

Perhaps, even in the world:

YAY YOU!

Summit reaches top of the brewing heap

Summit Brewing Co. and it's associated "brews" are amazing. I've been drinking Summit since I was "legal" to drink it... (perhaps a bit before I was legal)

I missed it terribly whilst living in Britain. And I've had a great time introducing My Lady to it's magic.

Here's to another 20 years!

Strange "Fun Friday" link-able commentary...

'Cause, you know, like, um... It's been a while.

Honestly, there was just SO much news today, that I couldn't help it.

Just for background:

Woke up this morning, it's a Friday, and I don't actually WORK on Friday... Which is a really nice feeling. But... We're "sans-newspaper" at the house-sit. GAH! Now, most of my readers know, I'm a newspaper hound. At my 'rent's house, I get the The Fascist Folio and the New York Times. Well, at the house-sit... NADA! And frankly, it's been killing me. So... I get up this morning, pour a cup of joe, and have a fag (that's a cig to my Yank readers) and... Decide, hell... It's not that long of a walk to the Super America up the street. They usually have the New York Times, or at least the Fascist Folio, which, compared to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, is a godsend. Anyhoo... They didn't have the bloody Times... So I picked up the Star Tribune, oops... I mean, Fascist Folio. Went home, and frankly, enjoyed the newspaper. That's not saying that I enjoyed the news... Well... I'll get to that in a minute. I am pretty upset about most of the news, but... Then some of the news was interesting, and rather ironic... So... I'll put up a varied mix of links today, okay?
  • We, in the United States of America have decided to violate the Geneva Conventions, common law, and morality by passing a bill for the Prez Dumbshit so he can torture people all he wants. Great! I'm so proud to be an American, and to join OTHER forward thinking countries like Indonesia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and others... In torturing and punishing people without due process of basic human rights! Yay AMERICA!!! New terror legislation on the way and Senate OKs new rules for U.S. treatment of terrorism suspects
  • 'Cause I tend to meander, and rant, and I just can't really write a good political commentary before rendering my brain down to mush, I'll link to this guy more often... He wrote a great blog entry on the Terrorism Bill, and it's what I WISH I could write. Thanks BigDaddyMalcontent.
  • Not to stop there... (Here's the ironic news of the day) The Twin Cities have just nailed down the Republican 2008 Convention! And what are we pissed off about? The fact that the media has been saying that "Minneapolis" is getting the convention, when it's actually being held in St. Paul! Ger... Damn "Fly Over Country" confusing the national press... Tee hee.
  • On that note, here's a funny... Corey Anderson at the City Pages has a great How do you know the Republican Convention has come to town? I laughed, I cried... It was better than Cats, I want to see it again, and again...
  • Good news... For Liberals, anyway... Judge rules gay R.I. couple has right to marry in Massachusetts. Now... It's only 'cause Rhode Island still hasn't "specifically banned" gay marriage in other states, like most states have done. See... The problem, is that if you get married in, say, Minnesota... Other U.S. states obviously have to accept your marriage as "legal." But... Since Gay Marriage is SO BAD, and only a few states are "allowing it" well... It's wreaking havoc with our entire country. So... Most states, Like Mass. Have made the law allowing gay marriage with a small caveat. If you're gay, and you live in Mass. And stay there... You can be married. However, if you're from another state that "outlaws" gay marriage, then you can't go to Mass. and get hitched if you're in a same-sex relationship. However... A judge found a "loop-hole" and the world is smiley. Well... I'm sure R.I. will take care of that oopsy fairly quickly. Can't let the faggots have equal rights with the rest of us "god-fearing, mullet-wearing, Christian-rightist, I hate the gays-talkin' FUCK heads... Oh no...
Well. That's enough for today, right? I think so. I hope you all have a marvellous weekend, and I'll be back, loud and proud later. Not sure "when" later... But later. Not tonight. But maybe tomorrow. Or maybe not. I don't...............

Quick Funny...

I don't know if any of my fine readers actually know this...

However, one of my favourite authors of all time, Steve Brust, has a LiveJournal site.

And he wrote an entry a while back, titled:
The second shortest Science-Fiction Story ever.

Here's a screen capture...

Check out his LiveJournal HERE.

And read his books! I've read every one of the bloody things several times, and will probably continue to do so the rest of my life.

Hmm... Wednesday.

Wednesdays are okay... They're the "hump" day. The day that is in the middle of the week... If you can "get over" the hump, you've made it through three of the five days, one generally works in our Western Society.

Of course, My Lady and I aren't "normal Western Society" and Wednesday is generally My Lady's 'Monday' and she has to work from today thorough the weekend. For me, it actually is my hump day, as I work only three days of the week at the moment, and Wednesday is the second of the third days... So... I guess I'm also 'normal' but only in the most broad and wiggly way.

I'm waxing lyrical today, as I don't have much to post. Get up, walk the dog, eat something, work, eat something, work some more, sleep.

Gah.

Okay... Fun stuff to make it all worth while to you, for actually READING my blog.

Bless you.

"There ought to be a nation-wide culling!"

Greetings fine readers... Well, a few days ago, my partner and marvellous wife, My Lady went on a bit of a rant about Americans, and British, and other war-mongering governments. The rant ended with the above title which I have permission to use in my blog today.

I mean, a "culling?" Wow. And all of YOU people think that I am the raging Liberal!

Well, here's the thing that's been getting my dander up lately:

It's the fact that the Republicans have been using "Terrorism" as the rallying cry for the election-year hooha. Dems are trying to push "Iraq War Quagmire and Economy" right now. And the really frightening thing, is that after the episode I wrote about on Thursday: What Terrorists Want and the call-in comments in said show... The republicans are WINNING!

How, gods? HOW???? And today, in the NY Times... there's a great article, about the latest report of the National Intelligence Estimate, saying that we are LESS safe than we were before 9/11, not because of Al Qaeda, no... Because of the wrong-headed and stupid Iraq War!

Of course, all of our best Spy Agencies are wrong, 'cause Dubbya is right, earlier this month:
"Documents released by the White House timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks emphasized the successes that the United States had made in dismantling the top tier of Al Qaeda.

“Since the Sept. 11 attacks, America and its allies are safer, but we are not yet safe,” concludes one, a report titled “9/11 Five Years Later: Success and Challenges.” “We have done much to degrade Al Qaeda and its affiliates and to undercut the perceived legitimacy of terrorism.”"
    - From the above article.
I mean... I mean... Just how stupid does Dubbya think we are?

Oh, wait... Most American's are actually BUYING the "Fight them in Iraq, instead of here!" line that the Prez and his crony's are spouting. Ger...

It's not fair... It's NOT fair that my fellow country-folk are this incredibly silly! It's just not fair!

Folks... Terrorists are NOT a danger to the U. S. of A... Anymore than anyone else in the world. We have to stop fighting a small group of Islamic Nut-jobs with our military, and start fighting them through societal education. If we start helping the Muslim countries that are SPAWNING these terrorists, we will cut off the BODY from the head of Terrorists! Stop chasing pipe-dreams and old sick men hiding in caves, and start sending food and aid and help to poor Muslim-countries. And that's sending FOOD, not Starbucks or McDonalds... Just NORMAL food. See... We're already messing stuff up by having our culture encroaching upon theirs... They HATE that... But we're making it ten times WORSE by having troops in the Mid-East! DUH!

Ger...

My Lady was right... A nation-wide culling may just be in order... Of course... The Conservatives would actually cull US FOLK, as opposed to us "culling" them.

Wait... They're already doing that too... What with cutting social programs... and...

Oh hell.... I quit for the day, readers... I'm going to go dunk my head!

What terrorists want.

Nice title, hmm? Well, I stole it: Lock, Stock, and Copyright from MPR today.

The only "nice" thing about having a long commute (1+ hrs on the road one-way) to LOLAU is my ability to listen to MPR programming. I love MPR. It's just the best news-source that I have nowadays.

Anyhoo... To the title: I listened to the Midday program hosted by Gary Eichten today, and they had as their guest, Louise Richardson Executive dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Her latest book is "What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat." She was a wonderful guest... (You can listen to it ONLINE by clicking here)

Professor Richardson was born in Northern Ireland, and grew up amongst the I.R.A. After leaving her village for "the big city" and university, she learned that there are two sides to every story. There's not the simple: "Terrorists = Evil" and "Governments = Good-guys" dynamic.

I sort of allude to this quite often, I suppose, but I'm a firm believer in the "the world is a mixture of grey, it's not "black and white" the way many American's think that it is/should be/really is, etc... etc... ad nauseam.

Professor Richardson is one of the "Premiere Experts" in the study of terrorism and the people whom use it as a weapon against society "at large".

During the program, (it's a call-in show) several American's called up to "argue" with the guest.

It was SO amusing. Actually, it's quite sad, some of the crap that comes dribbling from their slack-jawed mouths. However, it was edifying to me. You see, here's a guest, a Professor at HARVARD no less... Who has made it her life work to study and try to understand terrorism... And there's these "yahoo" weird Yanks that call in to the show, basically giving the "President's Line on Terror" to the expert!

It's rather galling, really... I mean, seriously. Lines like: "All Muslims want to kill us" and other bone-headed statements like that... It was "cringe-worthy".

Well... Let's just say that the woman has a great head on her shoulders. She impressed the heck out of me, and to be honest, it wasn't just the great remnants of the No. Irish accent.

Listen to the show, and let me know what you think!

Cheers!

Blogthings... 'Cause I'm at a loss.

Don't ever say that I don't know how to make a "filler" blog entry!

Sorry to everyone who HATES these things.

This scared me... A "Birth Order Predictor" that actually worked...

You Are Likely an Only Child

At your darkest moments, you feel frustrated.
At work and school, you do best when you're organizing.
When you love someone, you tend to worry about them.

In friendship, you are emotional and sympathetic.
Your ideal careers are: radio announcer, finance, teaching, ministry, and management.
You will leave your mark on the world with organizational leadership, maybe as the author of self-help books.

Okay, most of you actually READ this blog... And I don't know how I clicked THIS one out... But "What kind of blogger are you?

JEEZ... I WISH!
You Are a Pundit Blogger!

Your blog is smart, insightful, and always a quality read.
Truly appreciated by many, surpassed by only a few

Okay... A test, obviously created by a conservative republican. I deliberately had to choose HORRIBLE things, just 'cause it was slanted... Four out of five of these "answers" are conservative based things, and the ONE "liberal" slanted question is like: Yes, I actually DO enjoy biting the heads off of babies, and I don't mind taxing people. I mean... Come ON!

You Are a Liberal for Life

You've got a bleeding heart - and you're proud of it.
For you, liberal means being compassionate, pro-government, and anti-business.
You believe in equality for every person, and you consider yourself universally empathetic.
Helping others is not just political for you ... it's very personal too.

This one was rather naff...

You Belong in 1967

If you scored...

1950 - 1959: You're fun loving, romantic, and more than a little innocent. See you at the drive in!

1960 - 1969: You are a free spirit with a huge heart. Love, peace, and happiness rule - oh, and drugs too.

1970 - 1979: Bold and brash, you take life by the horns. Whether you're partying or protesting, you give it your all!

1980 - 1989: Wild, over the top, and just a little bit cheesy. You're colorful at night - and successful during the day.

1990 - 1999: With you anything goes! You're grunge one day, ghetto fabulous the next. It's all good!

And this one will make my friend Lucy happy, I'm not sure about the rest of my friends...

May I say: VAH!

Your Inner European is French!

Smart and sophisticated.
You have the best of everything - at least, *you* think so.

That's right... No Yank is safe!

Vaguely disturbed that I was even fifteen percent Redneck. It's probably 'cause I've learned to drive a tractor. Gah.

You Are 15% Redneck

I'll slap you so hard, your clothes will be outta style.
You ain't no redneck - you're all Yankee!

And finally... This one was rather spooky... A "Three Question Personality Test" that was rather "right on."

Your Personality Is

Rational (NT)

You are both logical and creative. You are full of ideas.
You are so rational that you analyze everything. This drives people a little crazy!

Intelligence is important to you. You always like to be around smart people.
In fact, you're often a little short with people who don't impress you mentally.

You seem distant to some - but it's usually because you're deep in thought.
Those who understand you best are fellow Rationals.

In love, you tend to approach things with logic. You seek a compatible mate - who is also very intelligent.

At work, you tend to gravitate toward idea building careers - like programming, medicine, or academia.

With others, you are very honest and direct. People often can't take your criticism well.

As far as your looks go, you're coasting on what you were born with. You think fashion is silly.

On weekends, you spend most of your time thinking, experimenting with new ideas, or learning new things.

Okay... That's it for today folks.... Have a great one, 'k?

Religion... Oh... Scary topic, no?

Hi folks.

I was reading one of my favourite "new" blogs. (which means I've just FOUND them, not that they're brand-new at blogging... But I digress)

Big Daddy Malcontent a great "Lefty-blogger" wrote a very good "balanced" entry about religion, and intolerance, and poked a bit at us other "Lefty Bloggers" that seem to be hell-bent (pun intended) on our self-righteousness and "secularity" or some such thing.

And after reading his entry, I felt vaguely guilty... You see, yesterdays post, I complained about DSL modems, and then took a poke at the Pope. (I just loved that consonance, don't you? poke at the Pope. Tee hee)

Well, I have always had a tendency of my typing getting ahead of my brain, and ranting and being, well... Rather rude.

So. For all the Catholics that read my blog yesterday, and were angry at me for calling Pope Benedict XVI, the Nazi Pope... Well... I apologise for upsetting you. It was not my intention to anger a Catholic. However, I must begin to realise that not everyone is as "Secular" as I am.

Whilst Big Daddy Malcontent seems to feel as though "Lefty" bloggers store up a LOT of anger, and then "explode" in a fusillade of intolerance. I must admit something about myself, that is even worse than just being Liberal...

I think religion is funny. Yep. Really, really amusing. I'm one of those people that sits around and shakes my head at the mythological ramblinigs of the modern American religous person. NO. I'm NOT an Atheist, nor am I Agnostic. I believe firmly and completely in God/Gods/Goddesses/Beings of a higher nature, et al. However... I think the "religiosity" of American Culture is at times, laughable, scary, frightening, destructive, or just, well... Cute. It can be ALL of these things at various times.

I'm one of those "weird people" that tends to trace every problem on the Earth back to a religious-foundation. Sure, many MANY wars are fought simply 'cause the other guy has stuff that we don't, so we kill them. However, religion is usually used for the 'excuse.' Actually, I find Georgie-pordgie's Iraq-War excuse (that of terrorism) to be much better... Oh...

Wait.

Religious-extremism, Islamo-fascists...

Damn. Nope... We're in Iraq because of religion TOO! Der.

Well... I guess what I'm saying, and since I'm just rambling now... I should actually SAY what I was originally trying to get to in this post, shouldn't I?

Although I'm sure a LOT of 'Lefty-bloggers' are rabidly NON-religous, I can't say that I am so. I'm not. However, my rather "loose-bundle" of belief systems, give me a certain distance from the rest of my friends and family in this country.

And this "distance" sometimes makes me seem intolerant.

For this, I apologise.

Adios, readers...

DSL is crud and Nazi Popes...

Sorry... But it IS. At my mother's house (where My Lady and I have been living) we paid for, and received Cable-broadband. It's fast... It seems to be about the same, or even faster than the T1 or whatever we have at LOLAU.

However, My Lady and I have begun our "house-sitting" stint in St. Paul. It's wonderful to be away from the "parent's house" and "on our own" etc... However, the internet connection at the house is a really POKEY "Qwest DSL" modem. I don't know what to say about the "Blazing Fast Speed" that these silly DSL-modems are supposed to have, but I'd say it seems about five times SLOWER than my Cable-modem. Gah...

Anyhoo... A fun Pic of My Lady:

My Lady AFTER the Braiding episode

What "Braiding Episode" you ask? Check out the pic here (towards the bottom of the post). Yes... THAT "Braiding Episode." Anyhoo... I think that Fiona with curly hair, is just adorable!

Um... Yeah. So.

Nothing much to go on about... Politics... Blah! Religion? Blah. I mean, except for the "Nazi Pope" for putting his gold-shod FOOT in his mouth. Muahahahaha! I'm surprised the Moslems didn't figure on this guy being a really good "hater." I mean... He IS CALLED the Nazi Pope for a reason. By the way... I'm not the ONLY person that calls him that... As if you look up in Wikipedia, the search: "Nazi Pope" he comes up! Ehh??? Ehh?? See???

Anyhoo... Yeah. That's about it for now. Just ending on the phrase:

Nazi Pope

Thursday and I'm at work

Sorry it's been a while. For some reason, everytime I tried to get into "blogger" I was not able to do so. Ger...

But I'm here now. And frankly, at the moment, I don't really have any time to write, 'cause, like... I'm at work.

However, a bit later this evening, I'll be bored, at work... And will attempt to find some time to blog then.

But... I just wanted to let everyone know that I love my job!

Yay JOB!

Recovery...

Well, My Lady and I have survived the Renaissance Festival once again, and THIS time, we did it with the doggy.

It was interesting, to say the least. Basically, I would equate the experience as attending an event with a hurricane attached to one's arm. Nah... Memnon was a very good dog. He loves humans... Other dogs, um... Not so much. But humans, oh yeah... He got some lovin.

I'd love to say that I had a million photos of the event. However... Because of being attached to a hurricane, I was unable to make photos of the event. That's not saying that I don't have a "few."

Here's a photo of the one time the "hurricane" calmed down. "Skippy" knew how to deal with him. Oh yeah...

"Skippy" and Memnon, the calm moment...

AFTER the affair, we drafted my mother into making a photo or two of us in our "gear" and I'll show you one of those:

All done up, in style, baby...

And a final photo... Fiona's "hair do" creation, by the "braiding booth" at the Fest:

"Princess Braiding, no. 2"

We had a really nice time. I am a BIT sore, due to the 'hurricane' but beyond that, all is well.

Well.

Um.

Yeah... It's Sunday. I'm done typin'. Smiles and kittens, readers...

Insane?

Perhaps.

Fun though.

Will let folks know how it went tomorrow.

Friday, September 08, 2006

Well... Friday.

You know, the really strange thing about my new job at LOLAU, is that I have Fridays off.

Why is that weird, you ask?

'Cause it means that "TGIF" doesn't really work for me anymore, as now it's more like: "Thank gods it's Thursday" and "TGIT" looks vaguely icky, as an acronym.

You may wonder why I'm getting so weird about acronyms, lately... And frankly, I don't know. In today's Zit's the dad gets an EAR-full of acronyms... (Source: http://www.arcamax.com/zits) And I had a good chuckle.

Perhaps it's an "age thing" for me. I mean... I'm not like the "dad in Zits" or anything... I know what "PDA" stands for... I know what "LOL" means... And frankly... I think it's great stuff. A few days ago, in the blogosphere I came across an entry railing against the "text-ation" of the language... Twenty Major bitcin' bout "Home-schooling" And if you READ this little rant, perhaps you'll understand my rather wiggly feelings about "Txt-A-tion."

See... Back in the day, when I was teaching high school, I assigned a paper to my students every term. The results of this experience have left me scarred. I kid you not... The way the students would compose a "sentence" was truly appalling. You want an example, don't you? Let's see if I can remember a "doozy" for you.

"In the l8tr 1/2 of the 20th Cntry. Photography changed."

I kid you not... I went and FOUND that paper again, to make sure I had it correct.

There's all sorts of people (usually old) that rail against the "youth" and their abilities to converse to the larger society. And truly, this has been happening forever. The difference, was that before, kids would come up with new "terms" and sprinkle them throughout their speech. In TODAY'S era, however... Kids are not only speaking differently than us old folk, they're also beginning to change the entire language.

Bah, HUMbug, I say... Bring back essay tests, score them PROPERLY... Take points OFF for misspellings, and grammar issues! KICK THEM IN THE ASS!

Before we lose everything.

Thanks for reading my rant today... Have a great weekend.

L-O-L-A-U...

As most of my "kind readers" know, I've begun my new job at my "Little 'Ol Liberal Arts University" From NOW ON, known as: LOLAU, 'cause the acronym looks vaguely Like "laugh-out-loud-at-you" in txt-spk.

Anyhoo... I've begun down at LOLAU, and it's a wonderful place to work. I really enjoy my coworkers, and the students that we have working in the Video-lab are top-notch. That's not to say that they don't lean towards the "vague" at times... But that's to be assumed... I have two VERY good friends, N8 and Meshtey Fer, who fit the same profile. You know, really REALLY intelligent and more than happy to "geek-out" at the slightest provocation? That type. Anyhoo... The students that work in the Vid-lab are quite a bit like my friends, so... I'm used to it.

Come to think about it... I'm a bit of a "geek-out" sort of person, m'self.

The REALLY amazing thing? The friend that helped me get this job is a HUGE computer-savvy woman... And strangely... She doesn't "scream geek" like most of us do. I don't know how she can look, act and BE so normal... I mean, when we all KNOW that she gets just as excited about a new "tech-gadget" as we do.

Hmm...

Anyhoo... The job is great. I'm learning all sorts of nifty stuff... And I'm having a great time.

Obviously... My blogging is going to suffer a bit for a few weeks, as I fall into a new schedule. So... I ask all of my kind readers to be patient with me.

Um... Beyond the "job" thing... My Lady and I are getting ready to head back to the Ren Fest again on Saturday. This time, we're going "dressed up" as a Scottish Couple from the "period." I'm looking forward to the trip. It should be fun.

Also... My Lady and I just spoke with the very nice woman who is having us "house-sit" for her for the next three-ish months. YAY! We're looking forward to moving back to St. Paul. The plan (which I've already spoken about) is to have a flat (apartment) lined up for December, so we can move directly from the "house-sit" into our own place. My mother is a wonderful house-mate, however... You know... The marriage will be easier without a "parent" around...

If you know what I mean.

Mmmmhaaa!

Okay... That's enough "cheese-sandwich" blogging for the day. I'll see ya all tomorrow, I think!

Smiles,
T

Sunday 3rd Sept. And a short 'n.

I hit my hand yesterday. Hard. It's a bit swollen, so... I'm typing with one hand. Gah. It's a mess. Aspirin is a good thing.

Quick post due to my injury:

Great Quote, today... From Quotes of the Day on my Google homepage:

Ha.

Quick posting to N8... Fi and I are still arguing over a day to go out this week. You may be off... But Fi and I work everyday between the two of us. We'll get there.

Quick posting to Brett... Welcome home! We've missed you during your European Peregrinations.

Weekend... Yay!

Hi folks... Well, I just had my FIRST day at work yesterday (Friday Sept.1).

I am really going to like this job. Yay! It was a bit of a whirlwind day... And I have a big learning curve that I have to overcome. However, the people are amazingly nice, and I feel rather confident that all will be great after about a month. Yeah... I know, but there's SO much to learn about this job... But I KNOW I'll be a really good addition to the already great staff.

My schedule is going to be pretty nice. Monday day, and Wed. evenings, and Thursday Noon till 9pm. (the long shift)

So... All will be great. This job also leaves me a good Fri-Sat OFF, meaning I should be able to finangle a part-time bar-gig on the weekend nights for extra money. I'm not going to start looking for yet ANOTHER job so soon... I want to get a handle on this I.T. job first.

Anyhoo... I have a great link from my friend N8... His site still isn't back up yet (he had the same issue we did with our hosting company for the website... So... He's still waiting for his servers to be switched. It should be soon... Hopefully... We all miss his dry sense of humour on-line...

Here's an example of N8's humour. I almost fell off my chair laughing...

Bunny

After seeing that one from N8... I trolled around a bit on the site and found THESE two others that I think are great too...

Damn you Duchamp and Dr whowhathow?

Muahahahahaha!

Anyhooossss That's it for today, readers... Have a great weekend!
